I didn’t go to Costa Rica for adventure.

At least, that’s not what I told myself.

I said I needed a break. A reset. Time away from everything that had started to feel a little too loud, a little too fast, a little too… controlled.

But if I’m being honest, I didn’t really know what I needed. I just knew I couldn’t keep moving at the same pace.

    So I booked the trip.

    Why I needed to leave

Before Costa Rica, my life felt structured down to the smallest detail.

Every hour had a purpose. Every decision had a plan. I told myself it was productivity—but deep down, it felt more like pressure.

Even when I tried to rest, my mind didn’t.

I was always thinking about what came next.

Travel, in my mind, was supposed to fix that. I imagined stepping into a completely different environment and instantly feeling lighter.

But the truth is, you don’t leave yourself behind when you get on a plane.

    The illusion of control

The first few days in Costa Rica were beautiful—but also unexpectedly uncomfortable.

Everything was slower. Less predictable. Less structured.

Plans changed. Timing didn’t always make sense. Things didn’t happen when I expected them to.

    At first, it frustrated me.

I caught myself trying to recreate the same sense of control I had at home—planning every detail, anticipating every step, trying to make everything fit into a system that simply didn’t exist here.

    And it didn’t work.

Costa Rica doesn’t respond to control.

    It invites something else entirely.

    The moment everything shifted

There was a moment—I remember it clearly—when something changed.

I was sitting outside early in the morning, surrounded by nothing but trees and sound. No traffic. No notifications. No urgency.

For the first time in a while, I wasn’t thinking about what I needed to do next.

    I was just there.

    And it felt unfamiliar.

    But also… right.

That’s when I realized something I hadn’t allowed myself to see before: I didn’t need more control.

    I needed less of it.

    Learning to be present

Once I stopped trying to manage everything, the experience began to change.

    I walked without a destination.
I spent time doing things that had no outcome.
I let days unfold instead of structuring them.

And slowly, I started to feel different.

    Lighter.
    Calmer.
    More aware.

But being present didn’t mean completely disconnecting from reality.

There were still practical things to handle—finding places, navigating unfamiliar areas, staying in touch when needed.

At some point, I realized that staying present didn’t mean disconnecting completely. I just needed things to work quietly in the background, which is why I chose to get unlimited data in Costa Rica with Holafly and focus on the experience instead of the logistics.

It wasn’t something I thought about constantly—but that was the point.

    Letting things be simple

Costa Rica has a way of simplifying everything.

You don’t need much to feel content.

    A quiet morning.
A view that makes you pause.
    A moment that isn’t rushed.

Without the constant need to optimize or control, you start to notice what actually matters.

And most of the time, it’s not what you expected.

What I brought back with me

When I left Costa Rica, I didn’t feel like a completely different person.

    But something had shifted.

I no longer felt the same need to control every detail. I didn’t feel as pulled by urgency. I had experienced what it felt like to move through life with a little more ease.

    And that stayed with me.

    Not perfectly. Not every day.

But enough to change how I approach things.

    The balance I didn’t expect

Before this trip, I thought the answer was either full control or complete disconnection.

    Now I understand it’s neither.

    It’s balance.

It’s knowing when to let go—and when to support yourself with the right tools so you can actually do that.

Because letting go doesn’t mean making things harder.

It means removing what doesn’t serve you.

    Final thoughts

Costa Rica didn’t give me answers.

    It gave me space.

Space to think differently. To feel differently. To move differently.

And in that space, I realized something simple:

You don’t need to have everything figured out to feel at peace.

Sometimes, you just need to stop holding on so tightly.

And allow things to unfold the way they’re meant to.
