It is inevitable that if you stand for something, you will face opposition in the way. Similarly, religious communities all around the world face a lot of oppression, discrimination, and many other diverse risks, all at the cost of their faith. In this article we’ll go through the many different types of risks that communities face.
Religious Persecution and Property Damage
Hate crimes against religious communities and minorities have been a commonality. The goal has always been to silence and erase. Property damage is the most common type of violence committed. In 2022, out of 198 countries, 120 faced this crisis. These attacks could be committed by both – the government and private social groups.
For example, the Jordanian authorities shut down 30 Quran teaching centers because they were not in accordance with the new conditions set by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs. Similarly, the Syriac Catholic Church leaders in Bartella were set to be driven out by Iraq because of their lack of tolerance against the Christians.
Detention
In North Korea, Christians face the greatest opposition and are detained in camps where they are made to suffer till it gets unbearable and they perish. In Israel, police raided Al-Aqsa in the holy month of Ramadan, detained 300 worshippers, and injured 150 while using tear gas and stun grenades.
Physical Assault
There has been a lot of physical assault when it comes to the clothing of religious parties. For example, Muslim women are assaulted for wearing the hijab on multiple occasions and across the globe, and there have been reports of men beaten up for wearing the Kippah, the Jewish skullcap.
Displacements
In 2022, China forced hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs Muslims to leave their houses and take up state jobs. The Burmese military coup has also displaced over 1 million people.
Murder and Killing
Statistics on Christian persecution show that in 2 years only, 10,000 Nigerian Christians were murdered simply because of their religion. Such is one of the many examples of people having to lose their lives because of their beliefs. Another example is when a family of 5 Christians were murdered in North Korea for simply sitting with the Bible and worshipping.
Social Discrimination
Social discrimination involves any act of unfair treatment or prejudice against someone because of their religion. Such behavior can manifest directly or indirectly, directly in the form of treating them unfairly and indirectly by applying some bias against them – even if it happens unknowingly.
Examples of social discrimination include not allowing a Muslim to come inside a restaurant or not giving a Jew a bank loan. Everyone has their own religious beliefs, and no one can force another to have the same beliefs as them.
Mental Health Issues
While religion does offer comfort and support to its followers, mental health issues can arise in the form of not getting support from families, like in the case of Libyan Christian converts who are tortured by their families for abandoning their older religion, or PTSD caused by the pain inflicted on you for following certain beliefs, or because of feeling isolated or discriminated against because of your beliefs and practices.
Misinformation
Propaganda, false narratives, and stereotypes against religious minorities make people intolerant of them. It makes such parties feel superior and allows them to justify their violent actions.
Political and Economic Factors
Religious groups, particularly religious minorities, are at serious risk from political and economic causes. There may be problems if governments enact legislation to safeguard minorities but then fail to do so. Governments may also force state religions on their population, which is against their rights and stops them from engaging in their religious activities. Several Middle Eastern and South Asian countries, for example, have state-sponsored discrimination against religious minorities that keeps them from getting homes, jobs, or good education.
Conclusion
Faith is something that gives people strength and does not instead become a source of pain. Sadly, millions of people worldwide suffer because of their religious beliefs in more ways than one. Religious persecution serves as a reminder of the need for strong legal frameworks and a common appreciation of human rights and religious freedom.
