The trip of Hajj and Umrah is a sacred journey for Muslims across the globe, bringing them to the heart of Mecca each year. Each step during this journey holds a purpose and meaning for the believers. The ritual of Tawaaf is a vital part of the pilgrimage, which truly defines its purpose. Pilgrims circle the Kaaba seven times to mark their submission to Allah. During the ritual, they come across many sacred spots near the Holy Kaaba, and Hateem is one of the most visited sites among them. This blog will share why praying in the Haram is an important part of the Hajj or Umrah for the worshippers. Whether you travel via best Ramadan Umrah packages or Hajj packages, this spot has a higher status in Islam.

    What is Hateem?

Hateem is a small area next to the Holy Kaaba open for praying to all worshippers. This area is further surrounded by Hijr Ismail, which is a white wall.  Historically, this place used to be a part of the original Kaaba built by Hazrat Ibrahim and his son.

The Hateem wall is around 4 feet and 4 inches high. With few funds to complete the sacred building, a portion of almost 3 metres was excluded. While it lies out of the Kaaba premises, it is still deemed as a part of the sacred structure.

Any prayer performed within this area is counted as if it were offered inside the Kaaba. The Prophet Muhammad prayed in the Hateem, and many companions did the same. Today, pilgrims from all over the world try to find the chance to pray in this space.

    Historical Overview

The history of the Hateem dates back to the time before the Holy Prophet gained prophethood. The Hateem is also known as Hajr Ismail (House of Ismail). As per the Islamic texts, Prophet Ibrahim (A.S) lived with his wife and his son Ismail (A.S) in Hateem.

Moreover, it is believed that the Hajr and his daughters are also buried there. Another popular historical account is that the Hateem was the home of the Holy Prophet’s grandfather, Abdul Muttalib. This is the place where he saw the birth of the Messenger of God and the digging of the ZamZam well in his dream.

When the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) reached the age of 35 years, a flood came that damaged the Holy Kaaba. It was decided by the Qurayish to rebuild the sacred structure once again. However, the building failed to get completed because of fewer resources. This made them leave a part of the foundation, which is now called Hateem.

Spiritual Importance of Worship in the Hateem

This section explores the spiritual importance of praying at the Haram by pilgrims. Let’s get into the details:

    ●      Following the Prophet

Pilgrims follow the Sunnah of the Prophet in Hateem. Various sources from scholars and hadiths mention the importance of this place.

As per one narration, this is the place where the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him) used to sit alone, worship, and even answer the queries of the people. Moreover, it is further told that this is the spot where Allah’s Messenger ascended to the skies above- The Night Journey.

As per the narration of Hazrat Aisha (R.A), the wife of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).

“When I expressed my desire to pray inside the Kaaba, the Prophet (PBUH) took my hand and led me into the Hateem (Hijr). He said, ‘Pray here if you want to enter the Kaaba because this area is part of the Holy Kaaba.”

This signifies the importance of the Hateem. By praying in this spot, Muslims connect spiritually with the legacy of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), drawing closer to their example of devotion and submission to Allah.

    ●      Countless Rewards

One more reason is because of the endless rewards. The Hateem offers an open and reachable space for every Muslim to earn that reward. Muslims can earn the blessings of Allah Almighty by seeking guidance or by asking for mercy at this place. Also, it is believed that Hateem is the spot where duas are likely to get accepted. One reason could be that the Meezab al-Rahma is located above the Hateem. This tiny channel for rainwater drainage from the Kaaba’s roof perfectly symbolises Allah’s mercy and blessings. Hence, pilgrims are always in search of an opportunity to pray below it.

Challenges of Worshipping in the Hateem

This section will uncover some of the challenges that worshippers face during worship in the Hateem area. Some of the typical issues are:

    1.    Overcrowding

One of the major challenges faced by the pilgrims is the overcrowding. This mostly happens in high seasons like Ramadan or Hajj. Hateem is the most desirable spot for Muslims to worship. This is why this place is often flooded with believers from every social background. People often struggle to enter the area, let alone pray inside it.

    2.    Lack of Time

This is also one of the main issues in pilgrimage. People who travel in a group for Umrah mostly face this issue, as they have to follow a specific schedule arranged by their guide.

However, solo pilgrims also encounter this problem. Due to the crowd pressure, the security staff sometimes request worshippers to keep moving. You will often find them saying “Yallah”, which translates to move quickly in Arabic. This makes the pilgrims feel rushed in their prayers, upsetting them for not getting enough time for worship.

    3.    Distractions

With many people entering and exiting, there is constant movement and noise in the Hateem. People often walk around, talk, or shift positions during prayer. These movements can break focus and make it hard to concentrate during Salah.

The sound of footsteps, whispering, or others making dua aloud can affect one’s peace of mind. At times, pilgrims may accidentally step in front of others while they are praying. All of this can interrupt the spiritual flow and make it difficult to connect deeply in worship.

    Wrap Up

This blog has shared why praying in the Hateem area is considered to be an important part of Hajj or Umrah. From getting extra rewards to following in the footsteps of the Holy Prophet (Peace Be Upon Him), this spot offers peace to the believers.
