Every year, thousands of road accidents are linked to towing setups with inadequate rear visibility. towing mirrors are one of the most overlooked pieces of safety equipment in the towing world. When you attach a caravan, horse float, or wide trailer to your vehicle, your standard door mirrors become nearly useless. They’re designed for a car, not an extended rig. In Australia, the law in most states requires extended mirrors when your trailer exceeds the width of your tow vehicle. This isn’t optional. It’s a legal and practical necessity.

Why Do Standard Mirrors Fail When Towing?

Standard factory mirrors give you a view of your car’s rear. The moment you attach a trailer that’s wider or longer than your vehicle, those mirrors create blind spots large enough to hide entire vehicles. A standard caravan is typically 2.4 to 2.5 metres wide. Most 4WDs sit at around 1.9 metres. That’s up to 600mm of trailer sticking out on each side that your mirrors simply cannot show. Changing lanes, reversing, or navigating roundabouts without proper coverage is genuinely dangerous. It’s not about convenience. It’s about knowing what’s beside you.

What Types of Towing Mirrors Are Available?

There are three main types. Clip-on mirrors attach directly over your existing door mirror and extend the viewing angle outward. They’re quick to fit and remove but can vibrate at highway speed. Strap-on mirrors loop around your door and mirror housing for a more secure fit. They suit a wider range of vehicle shapes. Electric extension mirrors are the premium option. They mount onto your vehicle’s existing mirror housing and often use your factory mirror controls. They’re more stable, more adjustable, and better suited for frequent towers.

How Much Does Improved Visibility Actually Reduce Risk?

A lot. Research from the UK’s Department for Transport found that around 25% of rear-end and side-swipe incidents involving towing vehicles were related to limited lateral visibility. When drivers can see the full length of their trailer on both sides, they make better lane change decisions, reverse more accurately, and respond faster to vehicles entering their blind spots. Towing mirrors increase your effective rear sight line by up to 300mm per side depending on the model. That extra visibility changes what you can and can’t react to.

What Should You Look for in Mirror Build Quality?

Not all mirrors are built the same. Look for mirrors with an anti-vibration mounting system. At 100km/h on a highway, a poorly made mirror will shake itself into uselessness within hours. Glass quality matters too. Opt for mirrors with distortion-free glass and a wide-angle convex element for close-proximity awareness. Housing material should be UV-stabilised and impact-resistant. Cheap plastic mirrors crack in the Australian sun within a season. Spend a bit more upfront and you won’t be replacing them every year.

    Are Spotter Mirrors Worth Adding?

Yes. Most quality towing mirrors now include a small convex spotter mirror in the lower corner of the main glass. This gives you close-range visibility for reversing into tight spots, avoiding kerbs, and seeing vehicles sitting just alongside your trailer. When you’re reversing a 7-metre caravan into a campsite, a spotter glass is the difference between a clean park and a very expensive scrape. It seems like a small feature. In practice, it gets used constantly.

Do Towing Mirrors Affect Driving Feel or Aerodynamics?

Extended mirrors add wind resistance. At highway speeds, this creates a slight increase in road noise and a minor drag effect on fuel economy. The trade-off is non-negotiable because the alternative is reduced visibility. Good mirrors are designed to minimise turbulence with aerodynamic housings. Some clip-on designs create mirror flutter at speed, which is both annoying and degrading to visibility. This is why build quality and mounting security directly affect your driving experience beyond just what you can see.

What Does Australian Law Actually Require?

Under Australian Road Rules, if your trailer is wider than your tow vehicle, you must have mirrors that let you see at least 4 metres to the rear along both sides of the trailer. Failure to comply can result in fines and loss of demerit points. More critically, it voids your insurance liability cover in an incident where poor visibility is a contributing factor. Fitting proper towing mirrors is not just a safety habit. It’s a legal requirement with real consequences if ignored.
